If you have ever strained to see further in a fog, then these are for you.  Projector fog lights reach out and light up things that are not visible to your cars' stock headlights.

Projector fog lights are almost the same as ordinary fog lights, but projector  lights have a different type of lens.  The different type of lens helps with the extra long throw of projector fog lights.

They are an aftermarket version of the car's OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) fog lamps.  These are usually separate units that have a right and left light.

They are available for most cars and give the car that 'euro' look. They are available for all cars if you can do without the OEM look. These lights also give your ride that OEM, 'high tech' and 'high dollar' look.

Seen in the light of extra visibility for the driver, they are a safety addition to your car.  They are especially useful during thick fog and heavy rain or snow.

So, projector fog lights look cool and add to your car's safety.  An excellent win-win.

When driving in the country, very bright and far reaching lights are particularly useful.  This is due to the spread out nature of things to hit in the country.  In the city, stuff is much more closely spaced.

Some of these lights have a halo, or ring of light that is visible and can be turned on separately.  This look is very cool and also called 'angel eyes'.

Different Halo effects:

What looks really right is to wire these rings to the parking lights. That way they are visible whenever your cars' parking lights are on. It represents the projector fog lights' 'low output' option.

Most of the time, these lights would be an integral part of the front bumper.  Some even mount on a spoiler, again, adding a very cool, clean look.

Then there is the HID consideration.  The HID bulb is a different type of halogen that is brighter, wider and whiter than ordinary halogens.   They project a much more natural lighting effect for the driver to see better.

Because they are much more efficient, they can provide many more lumens for less current and wattage.  As an added bonus, this extra efficiency makes them usually run cooler.  In addition to all these bonus goodies, they last longer.  That truly is a really good thing.

Here's a good video demonstrating the HID projector lights:

On changing bulbs the advice to not touch the bulb with your bare hands applies to all halogen bulbs.  Use a cloth to hold the bulb or gloves.  These bulbs get so hot that your skin has salts and oils on it (as clean as your hands may appear) and the presence of these on the bulb causes heat to concentrate in that spot, the bulb overheats as a result and fails.

Some OEM kits have integral switching.  That means that if your car came with ordinary fog lights and you swap out the stock fog lights, you already have a switch on the dashboard.  If this is not the case, most wiring kits have a switch that can be added to the dashboard.

Most kits include the needed wiring, plugs, relay, mounting bracket and (if needed) an on-off switch.

Installing a HID bulb:

A projector fog light needs to be aimed more toward the ground than ordinary headlights.  This is needed for the lights to actually be of use.

If aimed too high, the projector fog lights will light up rain drops or fog and create a big lighted blob in front of the driver.  This effect does not aid in visibility at all.

Projector fog lamps are pretty much the same as ordinary headlights, only they have a brighter bulb.

Projector fog lights usually look like stock fog lights and are sized the same.  This makes a lot of projector fog lights drop-in replacements for stock fog lights.  Again, the lens on projector fog lights is different than the lens on stock fog lights.

Ordinary halogen bulbs last a few hundred hours versus HID bulbs, which last a few thousand hours.  That is about a 10 times longer life.

Halogen bulbs put out about 700 lumens of light verses about 3000 lumens of light for HID bulbs.

Longer life and brighter lights add up to improved safety.  In addition to being able to see more, the lights are less likely to fail just when you need them.

In sum, projector fog lights are a stylish and safety smart addition to your wheels.
